Question of the Day: Where's the Next American New Wave?

Thanks to digital filmmaking and editing tools such as Final Cut Pro, it's easier ever than before for indie filmmakers on a budget to deliver their vision to the world via the internet, etc. Throughout cinema history, the world has experienced their own 'new wave' in the sense of breaking conventions and taking stories to the next level. What are your thoughts on an American New Wave--do you think it's already happened or is it still in the works?

Arguably, the new wave isn't going to be centralized. I have Final Cut studio in my apartment, so I edit from the comfort of my living room. At IndieProducer.net (where I studiously ignore their e-mails), they have a short film competition, and the finalists are from around the world. The US finalists are from the southeast.

And while I think it's still in the works, I wonder sometimes if we've hit the peak (with "mumblecore"... god, I hope not), or are we still on the way up the mountain?

Also, be an update demon, and update your blog today! Don't let the terrorists win!
